Measurements of the density, temperature, and velocity of the interstellar wind in the immediate vicinity of the solar system are reviewed and compared with observations from Copernicus. The dynamic properties of the nearby interstellar medium appear to extend to at least a few tens of pcs from the sun but do not appear to be associated with any well-known phenomenon. The available evidence suggests that the H density is lower at the solar system, and in the directions of Alpha Aur and HR 1099 than elsewhere in the nearby interstellar medium. The fractional ionization of H deduced locally is compatible with that derived for other species, assuming photoionization equilibrium. These results show that the region near the solar system is part of a warm (approximately 10,000 K), ionized (60%), low density (H density approximately 0.04/cu cm; He density approximately 0.01/cu cm) phase of the interstellar medium.
