An overview of the design parameters and the status of the 17 m Ø MAGIC telescope project will be given. During phase I the telescope will reach a threshold of 30 GeV and a sensitivity of 6.10-11/cm2 sec (5 sigma, 50 hours on source). `First light' is expected in mid 2001 and observations will begin in 2002. The telescope will be installed at the HEGRA site on La Palma. .
