General relativity and black holes are discussed within a cosmological context. The expansion of the known universe to include receding extragalactic objects is briefly reviewed and Einstein's concepts of space-time curvature and gravitation are introduced. Stellar gravitational collapse is examined and the radii of black holes produced by stellar collapse, as well as on all greater and lesser scales, are discussed in terms of space-time curvature. The universe is then defined as the geometry of its space, ascertainable only upon observation, and the implications of elliptical, parabolic and hyperbolic geometries are examined. It is pointed out that all the modern Friedmann and accelerated expansion cosmological models are consistent with a primordial explosion, the probable events of which are explainable by Friedmann cosmology. The unobservability of the primordial singularity and universal geometry is discussed and parallels between an elliptical universe and a black hole of a higher-order universe are noted.
