Ion-neutral damping of resonantly excited Alfvén waves can be the critical factor determining the maximum energy to which particles are accelerated by diffusive shock acceleration if the upstream medium is only partially ionized. The implications of this for acceleration in Supernova remnants is discussed and it is shown that old remnants are unlikely to be observable TeV gamma-ray sources. .
