Calculations are presented which show that the broad H alpha emission line wings observed in some Be stars are the result of electron scattering of line photons. This scattering effect is less noticeable in higher Balmer lines, and these lines show little evidence for broad wings. The net polarization of the broad wing radiation is predicted to be slightly higher than the polarization of the adjacent continuum.
