The paper reviews recent developments in the theory of irreversible processes and nonequilibrium thermodynamics. The irreversibility concept as a source of order at the macroscopic level is presented in the context of nonequilibrium phase transitions and dissipative structures. A stochastic theory of rate processes is introduced to study fluctuations and the mechanisms of instability and transition. Finally, a discussion of recent results on the relation between the deterministic laws of dynamics and the probabilistic description of physical processes is given.
