A new color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the globular cluster NGC 1261 obtained from 131 stars measured photographically from 22 plates secured in three telescopes is presented. The main CMD features are a giant branch of medium steepness, a well determined horizontal branch (HB) at V equals 16.63 with 78 per cent of the stars located in a stubby red region, a stellar deficiency between the red limit of the HB stars with the bulk of the giant branch intersection, and the presence of an asymptotic branch. The negligible reddening of E(B-V) and the mean magnitude of 16.64 of the nine RR Lyraes in perfect agreement with the mean luminosity of the horizontal branch stars, places the object at 15.9 kpc from the sun, 12.5 kpc from the galactic plane, and 18.2 kpc from the galactic center. The fact that the HB is basically populated by red stars in a cluster typified by medium metallicity features shows that a second parameter besides Z is necessary to explain the HB morphology.
