The structure of the whole North America dust cloud is investigated by comparing H-alpha scans obtained at high photometric accuracy with thermal radio continuum scans of the same angular resolution. An interpretation of the structure of the dust cloud and its relationship with the North American H II complex is proposed. It is shown that the dust cloud exhibits a fragmented structure containing a number of possibly contracting condensations from which new stars will be formed.
