ROSAT observations of young supernovae (SNe) in nearby galaxies are presented. The observations led to the detection of X-ray emission from the type II SNe 1979C in M100, 1951H and 1970G in M101. In contrast to radio observations, subsequent monitoring with ROSAT shows a steep decline in the X-ray count rate for SN 1979C over years. We also found evidence for the first detection of X-ray emission from a type 1 SN (SN 1994I in M51). Mass-loss rates of the progenitors and densities of the circumstellar matter are derived and discussed in the context of the Chevalier `mini-shell' model. .
