The coming observations by Chandra and XMM will probably revolutionize
the area of X-ray spectroscopy. This review discusses the expected X-ray
spectrum of starburst and active galaxies and suggest ways by which the
new observations will help understand the nature of such sources and the
AGN-starburst connection. .
