The rate of oceanic sedimentation was determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The method consists of following the decay of the ratio Io:Th as a function of the depth in the core of sediment by measuring the gamma-rays emitted from their descendants. The sedimentation rate of an Indian Ocean core was determined as 1.2 mm/1000 yr. This value is compatible with previous results obtained by the chemical separation method of the thorium isotopes.
