We summarize the pioneering work in the study of galaxies and clusters of galaxies made possible by the advent of imaging X-ray astronomy that was realized with the launch of the Einstein Observatory. We emphasize the uniqueness of the contributions from X-ray astronomy and focus on the discovery of hot coronae and dark halos around early-type galaxies, the determination of mass distributions and baryon fractions in clusters, and cluster structure. We discuss the cosmological implications of these investigations.
