In this paper we discuss a concept to develop and maintain scientific analysis software which will be used over a long period (ie. 10-20 years). During the design phase of long-life software, it is of course not possible to take into account new technologies that will emerge during the maintenance phase. A software package can optimally evolve, incorporating new techniques that are introduced during it’s lifetime, if it is designed with this evolution in mind. In this paper we will focus on our experience with the Science Analysis Software (SAS) application, which is used by around 2000 astronomers to reduce data from the XMM-Newton X-ray satellite. We will discuss briefly the origin and current status of the SAS data reduction software, with the central aim of looking for ways to keep the analysis capability at a high level throughout the next 10-15 years.
