When dealing with (or preserving) time series data, one does well to consider the circumstances under which the data were taken and the uses they may be put to. The higher the timing accuracy that is required, the more stringent will be the requirements for complete and accurate metadata. This paper presents a brief tutorial on time scales, time standards, and time metadata requirements. This includes issues like the difference between dynamic and coordinate time scales, relativistic effects, the connection with spatial coordinate information and barycenter corrections. We also refer to the Virtual Observatory time standards and the proposed FITS Time standard: WCS Paper V.
