Recent discoveries concerning the global characteristics of the processes that occur within about 1500 light years of the Galaxy's center are discussed. Present understanding of magnetic fields and dust distributions at the center is addressed. The use of near-infrared radiation of stars at the center as a distance indicator is described, and studies of the central region using radio spectroscopy are examined.
