The appearance of directional (tangential and rotational) discontinuities in the solar wind is well known and has been studied actively in the past. Limited by having only data from one single spacecraft many interesting features of interplanetary discontinuities have been found. The new ESA mission CLUSTER with four spacecraft now overcomes some of the limitations and opens completely new diagnostic possibilities. Using both single and multi-spacecraft magnetic field data analysis techniques we study motional and geometrical properties of directional discontinuities. As an elementary first step we apply the classical minimum-variance-analysis (MVA) technique to several selected events, followed by extensions thereof and correlation techniques. Among other things we also start investigating the role of superposed wave fields.
