The coordinate systems in common use for determining the position of aircraft are reviewed. The basic procedures and the difficulties that arise in switching from one navigation system to another are analyzed. Consideration is given to astronomical, Cartesian, geodetic, and plane coordinates; orthometric heights; and the mathematical definitions of the systems. Particular attention is given to the definition of height, which becomes especially important in modern satellite-based navigation and positioning systems (e.g., Transit, GPS) based on measurements to satellites. Such systems confront navigators with a new range of coordinate-system problems due to their three-dimensional character.
