Green et al. [submitted to JGR, 2001] presented an example of kilometric continuum (KC) being associated with a plasmaspheric bite-out structure as observed by the IMAGE Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) instrument. They showed that the Radio Plasma Imager (RPI) on the IMAGE spacecraft detected kilometric continuum as IMAGE passed through the bite-out. Ray tracing calculations, consistent with observations, revealed that the kilometric continuum source lies deep within the bite-out at the plasmapause and that KC would have a narrow beam-like appearance in longitude. The KC emission cone would then corotate with the plasmasphere since that is what the bite-out is observed to do. The purpose of this paper is to further investigate these initial results and determine if plasmaspheric bite-out structures are a necessary condition for the generation of KC. A number of cases will be presented during which GEOTAIL and/or WIND observes kilometric continuum and IMAGE/EUV is imaging the plasmasphere and RPI is making density soundings and in-situ measurements. The shape of the plasmapause will be derived from the EUV images. Direction finding of the observed continuum will be performed to see how it maps to any plasmaspheric feature. Cases in which bite-outs occur without the corresponding kilometric continuum will also be investigated.
