The understanding of Mira stars is examined in connection with the
nature and evolution of planetary nebulae. Particular attention is given
to the position of red giants in stellar evolution, white dwarfs and
supernovae as the final products of the evolution, red-giant pulsation,
and a scenario for the evolution of planetary nebulae.
