The spectra of distant stars and galaxies exhibit a pronounced red shift. If the universe were expanding, a Doppler red shift would be expected. Any additional model requires that the red-shifted spectra be (1) produced at the source and (2) observed by astronomers on earth. Starting with the stellar wind, the stellar corona, interstellar (and intergalactic) gases, Lambert's law of absorption, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution law for gases, and Newton's law of gravitation, together with a postulated reverse stellar wind which flows toward the star (or galaxy), a new model for the stellar red shift is proposed. The reverse solar wind with a maximum velocity component equal to the escape velocity from the star or galaxy will have a very strongly Doppler red-shifted emission spectral component. Over large distances the tenuous gases of interstellar (and intergalactic) space selectively absorb the radiation emitted by the slow moving atoms in preference to that of the fast moving atoms (in the direction of a distant observer) thereby making the previously obscured Doppler red-shifted spectra visible. The reverse stellar wind is suggested to be the energy source of the inverted temperature gradient in the stellar corona
