Potential Theory: Plasma
Scientific paper
The distribution of electric potential is computed in the vicinity of a conducting sphere injecting energetic electrons into a cold plasma. It is shown that the background electrons begin to undergo Langmuir oscillations immediately after the start of the injection. Simultaneously, they take on an average velocity directed toward the sphere, thus neutralizing its charge. The Langmuir oscillations die out in a time equal to the collision time of electrons with neutrals or ions. If the background electrons are magnetized, the equipotential surfaces external to the sphere are strongly extended along the magnetic field. The potential of the sphere turns out to be independent of the electron collision frequency. The influence of the injected electrons on the potential of the sphere is examined. It is shown that the influence is not significant if the radius of the sphere is less than the ratio of the velocity of the injected electrons to the Langmuir background frequency.
