The hypothesis that the solar system is a multiple stellar system is considered and various implications of this hypothesis for outstanding problems in the study of the solar system are examined. The Jupiter-sun system is regarded as the limiting case of a binary system, and scenarios for the formation of the other planets and the moon in the process of the evolution of the Jupiter-sun system are considered. A discussion of possible ways of evolution of interacting moonlike bodies lost by proto-Jupiter yields some conclusions on the formation of the moon and planets and points to the possible existence of a whole cloud of moonlike planets beyond Neptune's orbit. A possible genetic relationship between the comets and the members of the cloud is revealed, and one is led to a completely new concept of the origin of the comets and to a revival of certain aspects of the old eruptive hypothesis. The role of hydrodynamic processes in the water mantle and ice crust of the distant planets is discussed.
