History Of Astronomy: Observatories

Scientific paper

Flagstaff Hill served as Melbourne's first cemetery before it became the site for a magnetic, nautical, and meteorological (physical sciences) observatory in 1858. The observatory's short life and results are described following a brief look at the seven hectare Flagstaff Gardens. The founder and director of the observatory, Georg von Neumayer, had a varied career from sailor to gold digger to director of the Oceanic Observatory at Hamburg.
