It is shown that the observed quasi-steady centimetric emission from variable extragalactic radio sources may be explained by a model involving a quasi-steady outflow of relativistic electrons from a source's nucleus in an external flux tube associated with a steady-state magnetic field. The flux tube is assumed to be situated at the pole of the emitting object's magnetic field and to expand with increasing distance from the nucleus. The spectrum of such an inhomogeneous radio source is computed and found to be characterized by certain features that depend on the source's spatial orientation. The theoretical results are compared with observational data for several quasars and radio galaxies.
