The interstellar helium atoms streaming into the solar system are ionized by EUV photons, electron impact and charge-exchange with solar wind photons and alpha particles. This work considers the direct production of new He ions taking into account the 'resonant' charge-exchange process. The relative fluxes of the newly born He(+) and He(+ +) ions between the orbits of Mercury and Mars are computed according to several models of the very local interstellar medium. The comparison betweem the theoretical results and the observed profile of the newly born He(+) ions detected by the charged particle experiment on the AMPTE/IRM spacecraft indicates that a helium temperature of 7000 K and bulk velocity of 19 km/s fit the data reasonably well.
