The trap model calculations of Melrose and Brown (1976) and MacKinnon (1988) are extended here to the case in which electrons are injected isotropically into the trap. Simple expressions are derived for the precipitation rate F and the ratio R of coronal to thick-target hard X-ray emission. F and R are also computed numerically, allowing for the effects of collisional pitch angle diffusion. It is found, under quite general conditions, that F is considerably greater and R correspondingly smaller in the case of isotropic acceleration than in the case of acceleration perpendicular to the magnetic field. The implications of these results are discussed in the light of recent hard and soft X-ray observations.
