A review of the scanty evidence for rotation of interstellar clouds immediately before star formation suggests that galactic magnetic fields are not very important for the rotation of such clouds and that their rotation is caused mainly by cloud-cloud collisions. The real velocity field is only very poorly approximated by solid body rotation because of strong perturbations from turbulent motion. The separation distance between the binaries and mean density of the circumstellar clouds are calculated on the simple principle of equating the angular momentum of the observationally confirmed initial stage (rotating gas cloud) to the angular momentum of the observationally confirmed final stage (pairs of stars surrounded by circumstellar clouds).
