Lidar observation of the mesopause region has advanced our understanding of its counter-intuitive thermal structure greatly. Limited 24-hour observation on temperatures have been made, from which not only the profiles of diurnal mean temperature but also of diurnal and semi-diurnal temperature tides may be deduced. Since temperature and wind variations are correlated, their simultaneous observation would provide a more complete and robust understanding of the dynamics in the mesopause region. To this end, based on innovations supported by the CEDAR program, the Colorado State Lidar Group has recently upgraded its Sodium Lidar to a two-beam facility, permitting 24-hour continuous observation, weather permitting. In the month of August, 2001, the lidar was operated in the 3-frequency agile mode, permitting simultaneous temperature and line-of-sight wind measurements, with one beam pointing Zenith and the other pointing 30 degree East of Zenith. Three sets of (30 hours plus each) observations, believed to be the first simultaneous temperature and zonal wind measurement over complete diurnal cycles, have been completed. This paper will present the monthly mean as well as diurnal and semi-diurnal tides of temperature and zonal wind profiles in the mesopause region based on this data set, compare the results to model output, and discuss variability and consistency between observed tidal temperatures and wind.
