NASA's HST has gathered much observational data to date that is relevant to questions of cosmic evolution; galaxies at a redshift of 0.4, for example, can be clearly characterized as to shape, thereby establishing that the common forms of nearby galaxies were already in evidence 4 billion years ago. It is also noted that while spiral galaxies constituted 30 percent of galaxies 4 billion years ago, they make up only 5 percent of galaxies in nearby rich clusters. A galaxy cluster appears to have been detected at a redshift of 2.055, corresponding to an evolutionary period 10 billion years ago.
