The fact that BL Lac objects lie in the nuclei of luminous elliptical galaxies means that low-luminosity BL Lac objects are difficult to recognize. The problem of recognition becomes important for deep X-ray surveys, and can significantly distort the observed source counts and redshift distributions of BL Lac objects identified from such surveys. We have developed a method that enables us to predict the fraction of objects missed, the number counts, and the redshift distributions expected for different survey parameters. Many of the features of our predictions appear in the observed distributions. We believe that the above selection effect should be taken into account before conclusions about the statistical properties of BL Lac objects are reached.
