In the standard scenario, low-mass binary pulsars (LMBPs) are the descendants of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). More recent investigations indicate that a large fraction of the observed LMXBs may actually have started their lives as intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs). In this paper we summarize the existing problems and progress in the evolutionary studies of LMXBs and IMXBs with respect to LMBP formation.
