At the beginning of my talk I will review general aspects of the central line emitting region in active galactic nuclei (AGN). After that I will introduce basic ideas towards the topic what can be learned from observations of continuum and emission-line intensity variations. Knowing the size and the internal velocity of the line emitting regions one can estimate the central black hole mass in AGN. I will present results of variability campaigns of selected AGN. Finally I will introduce the 2D-reverberation mapping method. Comparing observed line profile variations with theoretical models one can get more detailed information on the structure and kinematics of the innermost Broad-Line Region in AGN.
