The state-of-the-art of electromagnetic mass driver concepts and railguns was investigated and space applications were determined. It is shown that technically, the application as stationary lunar appliance and as booster stage from Earth as well as nonstationary applications such as orbit transfer vehicle between near Earth orbits and geostationary orbits are viable. Poor performance compared with chemical propulsion is outlined. Disadvantages include large power supply, high system complexity, and low thrust.
