According to the Mathews (1983) proposal for the mass supply mechanism to a black hole in the center of a quasar, the X-rays from the central source penetrate the photosphere surrounding low mass stars, where the absorbed energy is distributed over the stellar interior by convection. The star then expands rapidly, and its outer layers are stripped by the central source's radiation field. The depth to which the X-rays can penetrate the low mass star before they are absorbed, and the inward transport of the energy flux, remain major uncertainties. The crucial hypothesis of X-ray absorption within the convection zone is presently tested in view of the effects of X-ray absorption in the secondaries of low mass X-ray binaries. Reverse evolution is found not to occur.
