A reexamination of HEOS 2 data concerning short time scale magnetic field perturbations inside the magnetopause, using the same analysis techniques applied to later ISEE data, indicates that flux erosion events and flux transfer events (FTEs) are the same physical phenomenon. Since the orbit of the HEOS 2 spacecraft was a highly eccentric polar one, with an orbital plane nearly perpendicular to the earth's equatorial plane, the identification of FTEs in the lower time resolution data of this satellite raises the possibility of examining FTEs over other regions of the magnetopause than those covered by ISEE 1 and 2, as well as the determination of FTE signatures' evolution as they move along the dayside magnetopause to the tail.
