X-ray observations of PKS 0537-441 obtained with ROSAT in April 1991, together with a reexamination of the previous EXOSAT data, are reported. The hydrogen column density N(H) = (3.0 +/- 1.3) x 10 exp 20/sq cm is consistent with that deduced from 21-cm observations. Optical spectrophotometry of February 1991 indicates a moderately high state of the source. The observations are also discussed in the light of the newly discovered gamma-ray emission.
