The Thor-Able booster rocket, which at its first flight in July 9, 1958 began the U.S. Air Force's experience with multistage launch vehicles, was subsequently able to loft the first American moon probe attempts and to undergo modification for the launching of satellites and other space probes. The Able, which is a derivative of the earlier Vanguard rocket's upper stage, was mated in October, 1958 to an Atlas missile in order to undertake a series of launch attempts, in the course of which all four examples of this launch vehicle system were destroyed. The Atlas-Able was to have lofted a lunar probe.
