We present preliminary results of an image of the nearby grand design spiral galaxy M51 using the new Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC-II) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The image shows the 350μ m thermal continuum emission from dust. Spiral structure is evident, and provides a determination for the dust temperature as a function of galactocentric radius. The SHARC-II camera is operated in a direct-imaging mode, as opposed to the differential (chopped) mode common to other submillimeter camera. An advantage of the direct-imaging mode is that the maps made are not differential, and so faint, large-scale structure is retained.
