Near-infrared speckle interferometry shows that Lk Hoc 233 has a bright scattering halo about 1000 AU in size positioned symmetrically around the central star. This halo can be understood as inward continuation of the much more extended optical reflection nebula. The scattering particles in the halo must be larger than is typical for the interstellar medium. The intrinsic infrared colours of Lk Hα 233 are significantly altered by the subtraction of the halo from the system. The extinction to the central star appears to be underestimated because of the neglect of scattering.
