The first observation of gamma-rays from Vela X-1 is reported. Data from the Buckland Park air shower array contain an excess of events from within 4 degrees if Vela X-1 with characteristics of gamma-ray initiated showers. These excess events are in phase with the orbital period. The probability of this detection occurring by chance is approximately 0.0001. The time-averaged gamma-ray flux above 3 x 10 to the 15th eV is (9.3 + or -3.4) x 10 to the -11th photons/sq m/s, corresponding to a luminosity of approximately 2 x 10 to the 34th erg/s per decade of energy at 3 x 10 to the 15th eV.
