The loudest gravitational-wave events in the universe are generated by the mergers of black holes. LISA will be sensitive to these waves to enormous distances, easily hearing the waves generated by mergers at redshifts z ˜ 5, and in some cases reaching back as far as z ˜ 20. LISA will thus make it possible to probe the earliest black hole mergers in the universe, teaching us about the merger dynamics of some of the universe's earliest structures. In this talk, I will describe how these measurements can be made and quantify what can be learned from observing these merger waves.
