The synthetic rotational profile of the A-X (0,0) band of CS have been compared with the observed profile for comets Bradfield (1979 X), P/Giacobini-Zinner and P/Halley. The synthetic profile for a gas temperature ˜200 K gives a reasonably good fit to the observed profile for comets Bradfield (1979 X) and P/Giacobini-Zinner. However for comet P/Halley there is some disagreement in a small wavelength region. Extensive time-dependent calculations of various types have been carried out to see whether freshly formed molecules could remove the observed discrepancy. This is also associated with serious difficulties.
