We show how the SDSS LRG redshift survey can be used to estimate the equation of state for the dark energy. By the end of the survey, the SDSS LRG sample will consist of 100,000 redshifts in a volume limited catalog out to redshift 0.45, filling a volume of close to 2 cubic Gpc. The change in the angular diameter distance relation will cause an anisotropy in the three-dimensional power spectrum of the large scale galay distribution. Our analysis uses the Karhunen-Loeve transform of the three-dimensional galaxy distribution. The KL eigenmodes can distinguish between distortions due to dark energy and to linear infall. We expect to be able to measure w to an accuracy of 5%.
