Starting with the volume for 1984 the apparent places of fundamental stars (APFS) are computed in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the IAU in Grenoble (1976), Montreal (1979), and Patras (1982). This paper gives a description of the procedure applied for the computation of the APFS. In particular fomulae are given describing the following variations of star coordinates and proper motion components: precession, transformation to another epoch, nutation, annual aberration including the effects of special relativity, annual parallax, and light deflection by the Sun. The revised position of the equinox is taken into account and the so-called "motion of the equinox" is eliminated. A FORTRAN program for computing apparent places of stars for any Julian date can be provided.
