The South Pole offers excellent atmospheric conditions for submillimeter astronomy. In particular, the small values of precipitable water vapor, the low atmospheric temperature, and the excellent atmospheric stability should allow sensitive background--limited bolometric observations in the 350 and 450 mu m windows. I will discuss the potential of such observations for studying dusty high--redshift galaxies, similar to those which have recently been detected with the SCUBA instrument on the JCMT, and will discuss the merits of a large submillimeter telescope at the South Pole in comparison to other projects such as the MMA/LSA and FIRST.
