The Byurakan-IRAS galaxy sample (BIG sample) is based on optical identifications of IRAS point sources by means of the First Byurakan Survey low-dispersion spectra, DSS and IR colours. All IRAS galaxies in the region +6115) have been revealed up to the limit of IRAS survey. The sample consists of 1700 galaxies, including 500 previously known ones. A redshift survey for these objects is being carried out and redshifts in the range of 0.01-0.2 have been measured. There are AGNs and interacting pairs among the nearest objects, groups of galaxies and ULIGs among the farthest ones. This sample, investigated in an area of some 1500 sq. degrees, permits study of the properties of starburst and interaction phenomena in the Local Universe. Many of the galaxies are radio and X-ray sources, too.
