A method for mapping radio sources based on visibility data with large systematic phase and amplitude errors is presented. It is shown that closure amplitudes derived from the ratios of uncalibrated amplitudes observed on four or more baselines can be employed as observables in hybrid mapping techniques making use of a closure phase obtained from the algebraic sum of three or more uncalibrated phases. Systematic amplitude errors due to atmospheric absorption and emission, telescope gain errors, and receiver temperature and gain variations are found to cancel in the calculation of the closure visibility. Results of blind tests which indicate the usefulness of closure amplitudes are presented, and it is concluded that the procedure is applicable to any system which can produce detectable interference fringes, not only at radio frequencies.
