Although the Viking spacecraft were designed to operate for only 90 days, the two landers and one orbiter have been observing seasonal changes in the Martian atmosphere and surface for almost 4 years (2 Martian years). Views of the planet, some taken as recently as late 1979, show volcanoes, lava plains, channels, canyons, plateaus, impact craters, wind erosion, global dust storms, polar caps, clouds, and the surface features of Phobos and Deimos. The latter image is the highest resolution picture ever taken of another object from an orbiter or flying spacecraft.
