A review of the statistical methods and their application to the planetary sciences is presented. The relationships between samples and/or variables belonging to data from space missions are determined with univariate and multivariate methods; regression and trend analyses were used to compare the reciprocal behavior of different variables. One of the simpler factorial techniques is the principal-components method in which the original variables are associated in 'typical' form that can be interpreted in terms of a genetic process. Finally, the R-mode, the Q-mode, and the G-mode analyses are compared in regard to their application for the study of planetary surfaces.
