A catalog containing the basic optical information on all QSOs and BL Lacertae objects which have been certainly identified, meaning, in the case of QSOs, that redshifts have been measured (complete to 1979 September), is given. Included are the coordinate designations, other names, equatorial coordinates, visual magnitudes, (B - V) and (U - B) colors, the emission-line redshifts, emission lines detected in the optical spectrum, absorption-line redshifts, and references for finding charts, absorption- and emission-line redshifts, and photometry and polarimetry for 1549 QSOs and BL Lacertae objects. Cross-reference tables are provided for finding coordinate designations of objects known by noncoordinate names. For convenience the BL Lac objects, which are included in the main tabulation (Table 1) are also listed in a separate table. Also given are tables containing the list of QSOs which lie in the fields of bright galaxies and QSOs which form close pairs or multiple systems.
